A shift in weather patterns has brought relief to Kashmir as a combination of mountain snowfall and rain in the plains ended a long dry spell. This change, occurring during the start of the 40-day ‘Chillai-Kalan’ period, has led to a significant rise in night temperatures across the Valley.
Temperature Trends and Records
Cloud cover across the region acted as an insulating layer, pushing minimum temperatures several degrees above the seasonal average:
- Srinagar: Recorded its warmest night of the winter so far at 4°C (6 degrees above normal).
- Gulmarg: The only station to remain below freezing at -1.5°C, though this was still 5 degrees warmer than usual.
- Other Regions: Pahalgam and various other stations saw temperatures hover between 2.5°C and 3.8°C.
