The Railway Ministry announced a targeted fare hike on Sunday, set to take effect on December 26, 2025. While the increase aims to bolster revenue by an estimated Rs 600 crore by the end of the fiscal year, several categories remain exempt to protect short-distance commuters.
Breakdown of Fare Increases
The price adjustments vary based on travel distance and coach category:
- Ordinary Class: Fares will rise by 1 paise per km, applicable only for journeys exceeding 215 km.
- Mail/Express (Non-AC): A hike of 2 paise per km.
- AC Classes (All Trains): A hike of 2 paise per km.
Exemptions
To minimize the impact on daily travelers and short-distance passengers, the following remain unchanged:
- All monthly season tickets for suburban trains.
- Ordinary class travel for distances up to 215 km.
