J&K Weather Alert: IMD Issues Yellow Warning Till July 13; Heavy Rain, Landslide Risk in Chenab Valley and Pir Panjal
JAMMU: The Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Alert for Jammu and Kashmir till July 13, warning of heavy rainfall, lightning, flash floods, and landslides in several parts of the Union Territory. The advisory comes in the wake of recent cloudburst incidents in Doda and Kishtwar, raising concerns over further weather-related hazards.
According to the Meteorological Centre, weather conditions are expected to deteriorate from late Tuesday night across the Jammu region, with July 11 and 12 likely to witness intense rainfall over the Chenab Valley, Pir Panjal range, and adjoining areas. The department has cautioned that heavy rain may trigger landslides, waterlogging, and lightning strikes, particularly in vulnerable hilly regions.
Meteorological Centre Director Mukhtar Ahmad said that light rainfall was recorded during the past 24 hours in Udhampur, Ramban, Reasi, Kathua, and Samba, while Jammu city remained largely dry with partly cloudy skies. He added that weather activity is expected to increase from Wednesday morning.
The forecast indicates moderate to heavy rainfall in Shopian, Pulwama, Anantnag, Kulgam, Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, and the Pir Panjal region. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also likely, increasing the risk of landslides in mountainous areas.
In view of the weather warning, the administration has advised residents, pilgrims, and commuters travelling through hilly routes to exercise extreme caution. People have been urged to stay away from rivers, streams, and landslide-prone areas during periods of heavy rainfall and to strictly follow official advisories. Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored, and further alerts will be issued if required.
