The Jammu and Kashmir Transport Department has made reservation of seats for women and specially-abled passengers mandatory in all public service vehicles operating across the Union Territory. According to a circular issued by the Transport Commissioner’s office, seats numbered 1 to 12 in big buses and seats 1 to 9 in medium and mini buses will remain exclusively reserved for women and specially-abled persons. The reserved seats must also be clearly marked for easy visibility.
The department said earlier instructions were not being implemented properly, causing inconvenience to passengers. It warned that strict action would be taken against violators under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, including fines, suspension, or cancellation of permits.
Drivers and conductors have been made personally responsible for enforcing the reservation policy. The Motor Vehicles Department and Traffic Police have also been directed to conduct regular inspections and special drives to ensure compliance with the new rules.
