The Motor Transport Department has issued an order making it mandatory for e-auto and e-rickshaw drivers operating in Jammu city and nearby areas to install fare meters. The decision has been taken in the interest of passengers to prevent overcharging and arbitrary fare collection.
The department has directed all drivers to install meters within 15 days. After the deadline, vehicles found operating without meters will face strict departmental action during inspections.
RTO Jasmeet Singh said that the department had been receiving frequent complaints from passengers regarding excessive and unfair fare charges. Keeping these complaints in mind, the installation of meters has now been made legally compulsory. The move is expected to bring transparency and control over arbitrary fare practices.
Officials from the Motor Transport Department have already visited various auto stands across the city to inform drivers about the new order.
