Two people died on Wednesday after a private car skidded off a sharp curve and fell into a deep gorge near Gujjar Sumbal on the Aru Valley road in Pahalgam, south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Officials said an Alto, registration number JK03C-6737, lost control near the bend and rolled down into the gorge. The accident triggered a large-scale rescue operation at the site.
Police, rescue teams and local volunteers recovered two bodies from the gorge. Authorities have not yet confirmed the identities of the deceased.
Search operations continued till late evening to determine if more people were travelling in the vehicle. Officials said efforts were underway to rule out the possibility of other occupants being trapped or injured.
Police have taken cognizance of the incident and started an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the crash.
Authorities urged commuters to drive cautiously on hilly roads, especially on routes with sharp turns and difficult terrain. Further details are awaited as rescue work continues.
