The Ramban district administration has issued a high alert and appealed to residents living along the Chenab River to remain cautious as the gates of the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Station will be opened for a scheduled silt flushing operation.
According to officials, the operation will begin at 10:00 PM on July 16 at the Baglihar reservoir in Chanderkote to remove accumulated silt. As a result, the water level and flow of the Chenab River, particularly in downstream areas, are expected to rise suddenly, posing a potential risk to life and property.
The administration has advised the public to stay away from the Chenab River and its tributaries. People have been strictly warned against bathing, swimming, fishing, rafting, or engaging in any activity in or near the river during the operation.
Residents living in low-lying areas have also been asked to shift livestock, agricultural equipment, and other valuables to safer, higher locations. Authorities further advised people not to cross streams or water channels that may experience a sudden rise in water levels.
The district administration, police, and SDRF teams have been placed on alert to monitor the situation. Citizens have been urged to avoid rumours, follow only official advisories, and immediately report any emergency or suspicious situation to the nearest government authority or disaster management agency.
