In Jammu’s Sohanjana area, an e-bus was stopped by locals on Friday after allegations that it refused to pick up women passengers. The incident occurred when a bus passing through the area allegedly did not allow female commuters to board and continued its journey, triggering anger among residents.
Locals intercepted the bus at the next junction, forcing it to halt. The driver and conductor were made to step out, and a heated exchange took place between them and the public. During the confrontation, passengers were asked to deboard the vehicle. However, the staff initially denied the allegations of misconduct.
After prolonged arguments, the situation was defused when the driver and conductor assured that women and girls would be allowed to travel as per the rules. Following this, the bus was permitted to continue its route.
Residents have urged the concerned authorities to take strict action against erring bus staff, alleging repeated incidents of misbehavior and denial of service to women. They also demanded proper enforcement of smart city transport rules. The Smart City CEO stated that no formal complaint has been received so far but assured strict action if violations are reported and proven. Women are allowed free travel on these e-buses.
