Multiple spillway gates of the Salal Dam in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district were opened on Sunday following a sharp rise in water inflow into the Chenab River due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas.
The controlled release of water is being carried out to regulate the reservoir level and ensure the safe operation of the Salal Hydroelectric Project. Authorities said the discharge is a precautionary measure aimed at maintaining dam safety amid increased inflows.
With the water level in the Chenab River expected to rise downstream, the administration has advised residents, tourists, and fishermen to stay away from the riverbanks and avoid venturing into the water. Officials are continuously monitoring the situation and have appealed to the public to follow official advisories and not spread or believe rumours.
The administration assured that the release is being managed in a controlled manner and that all necessary precautions are in place to safeguard people living in downstream areas.
