A tragic incident took place on Tuesday morning in the Samroli area of Udhampur district, where a 22-year-old woman drowned in the Tawi River after slipping into the fast-flowing water.
According to reports, the victim, identified as Anita Kumari alias Neeta Devi, had gone to the riverbank around 9:30 am along with her younger brother to give water to their cattle. During the process, she reportedly lost her balance and slipped into the river. Within moments, she was swept away by the strong current and disappeared in the deep water.
The incident created panic in the area as local residents immediately attempted to rescue her, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Soon after receiving information, police teams along with SDRF and NDRF personnel reached the spot and launched a rescue operation.
After nearly two-and-a-half to three hours of intensive searching, rescue teams recovered the woman’s body from the river. Disaster management officials present at the scene tried to revive her by administering CPR, but she had already died.
Police later shifted the body to GMC Udhampur for postmortem examination. Further legal proceedings and investigation into the incident are underway.
