A viral social media claim alleging that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will discontinue old ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, and ₹100 currency notes printed before 2005 from July 1, 2026, has been declared false by the Government of India.
The claim, widely circulated on social media and messaging platforms, featured a fake notice carrying the logo of the Bank of Maharashtra. It falsely stated that the RBI had ordered banks to stop accepting old currency notes issued before 2005 from July 1.
However, the government’s fact-checking agency, PIB Fact Check, has dismissed the claim as fake, clarifying that the RBI has issued no such instruction. The agency urged people not to believe or share misleading posts that create unnecessary panic.
The Bank of Maharashtra has also clarified that the viral notice is fraudulent and does not originate from the bank. It advised customers to rely only on official announcements from the RBI and the bank itself.
As of now, all genuine ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, and ₹100 banknotes—including those printed before 2005—remain legal tender, and there is no deadline for exchanging or depositing them. The RBI has not announced any demonetisation or withdrawal of these denominations.
