In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, Anantnag Police arrested an inter-district drug smuggler and seized 2.613 kilograms of heroin (brown sugar) with an estimated international market value of ₹20 crore.
The recovery was made during a routine naka checking operation at Halmulla in Anantnag district. Police intercepted a suspicious Maruti Ignis (Registration No. JK09B-2808) and conducted a thorough search of the vehicle.
During the inspection, officers recovered four packets of heroin concealed inside the vehicle. The driver was identified as Ishtiyak Ahmad Moghal, a resident of Prada, Tangdhar in Kupwara district.
Following the seizure, police registered FIR No. 195/2026 under Sections 8/21 of the NDPS Act and launched an investigation. In accordance with legal procedures under Section 50 of the NDPS Act, the accused was subjected to a personal search, during which another packet of heroin was recovered from his possession.
With the additional recovery, the total quantity of heroin seized reached 2.613 kilograms, making it one of the biggest drug recoveries in the district in recent times.
The accused has been arrested, and further investigation is underway to trace the source of the contraband, identify its intended destination, and uncover the larger drug trafficking network, including both backward and forward linkages.
Police reiterated their commitment to eliminating the drug menace and urged the public to cooperate by sharing credible information about narcotics-related activities.
